This is Ground Zero for the modern Skiing Movement and is the gold standard for which all ski films aspire to be.

How did you guys miss "Aspen Extreme"??

NO TRG ?

So you asked the Warren Miller staff about the best ski movies ever made and most of what they came up with were their own, what a shock. Does Warren Miller Films sponsor this site. Check out Teton Gravity Research some time. Also in the Hollywood films how could you leave out "Aspen Extreme' ? Great film for the time and some awesome skiing sequences.

We asked the folks that make Warren Miller Films as well as the editors of SKI Magazine, Skiing Magazine, and SkiNet.com. We also included responses from SkiNet community members.

Warren Miller doesn't "sponsor" the site. SkiNet.com is the site of Warren Miller.

There are only four films in the top 10 (with ties 12 really) and most of them are in the bottom. Don't like our responses? Sound off in the message boards after signing up to be a community member.

Most of those are good (especially Hot Dog, The Movie) but I think the greatest ski movie of all time is Dr. Arnold Fanck's Der Weiss Rausch starring Hannes Schneider and Leni Riefenstahl. See http://www.riefenstahl.org/actress/1931/

What is the top film from each decade, starting in the 1920s?

Must admit, I almost fell off my chair when I saw that Playground made the top 10 and not 'Off the Grid' with it's footage of AK and tribute to Doug Coombs. Were these seasoned ski movie watchers reviewing them or people wanting more Disney-style gimmicks? So I would have to disagree with you there. I have seen many Warren Miller films and Playground was the only ski movie I've seen that was hard to sit through (hardly any big mountain footage) and I was tempted to leave at intermission for the hot tub. I also agree with the comment about TGR. That is even more surprising to not see it here. They are taking over the ski movie business. I'm now even more suspect of the judging used by your publication and that this seems to be more of an advertisement for self-promo than an actual review as one comment said. The new directors of Warren Miller films can learn from TGR and Matchstick. I do however agree with Blizzard of Ahhs - it started an irreversable movement and deserving of #1 place.

100% the Blizzard of Oz is the best ski movie that has ever been made. Scott Schmidt started the progression of a new style of skiing. Plake made this name in that film, and is now skiings #1 spokesman. Don't forget Mike Hatrup ripping the bumps. And Darren Johnson too. It was a time when skiing was free from side sliding Donkeys and their bro braws. I heard Greg Stump was working on a new Blizzard of Oz.....

"Winter Equinox" Sometime in the early '70s. Great documentary about early Hot-Doggers.

I guess none of the people interviewed have seen Steep. It doesn't seem like you cast the net very wide. I'd hoped for a more definitive effort.

Aspen Extreme is an awesome movie!! I 'm suprised it wasn't included....way better than Hot Dog the Movie, IMHO

Too good. I watched this every weekend in college before going skiing in the mornings and when I got home at night.

I found out a little late in my life about Warren Miller and Greg Stump. Extremely bright and creative individuals. Difficult to choose I think my favorite WM movie is Journey and my favorite Stumpy's without a doubt The Blizzard of Ahhs. I'm looking forward to seeing their latest films specially Stumpy's new one coming this fall I think called The Legend of Ahhs..

Where is Aspen Extreme? Why is better of Dead on this list?

Cannot agree more!!! Best ski film ever! As I went down in the ranking I feared not to find the Aahhh's! You got it right!

I watched this movie over a thousand time. Good job for the ranking.

I have seen a mountain of ski movies. This list is far from perfect but it does feature Teddybear Crises. Teddybear has awesome music and some of the gnarliest big air I've ever seen. The best Warren Millar flick of the 90's was definitely Freeriders. The music in that is stellar. I like the more recent Warren Miller stuff too. There was a movie in the lates 80s called "Double Trouble". It wasn't a warren millar movie and I've only ever found it on VHS but it has the best ski star banter I've ever seen. The movie is about two pairs of brothers the Egans (Dan and John) and the DesLauriers (Eric and I cant remember the other brother). Hilarious footage and epic skiing.
