Ski Season Gears-Up Down Under

Cardrona, New Zealand, June 6--In search of the endless winter? Snow is falling on ski areas south of the equator and soon the slopes will be open. New Zealand's Cardrona Ski Area already has a snow base close to one foot.

Cardrona's three unique basins combine to offer 791 acres of skiable terrain ranging from beginner to extreme. Much of this terrain is tentatively set to open on June 24. Closing day is scheduled to follow more than three months afterward on October 8.

This past summer (our winter), the ski area invested over $500,000 in improvements to enhance the overall experience at Cardronoa. Beginners get some help with two new 164-foot Magic Carpet rides. To keep a closer eye on reckless skiers and to assist those in need, four "ambassadors" will be on patrol. The kid's team also increased its staff from six to 10 instructors.

Off-slope the parking lot now holds another 100 cars. With more people expected, the Captain's Café increased seating capacity inside from 80 to 130 and now accommodates 100 people outside.

An average of 98.4 inches of snow falls on Cardrona's 1,279 vertical feet. Of this terrain 25 percent suits beginner, 55 percent intermediates, and 20 percent is for advanced skiers.

Keep checking back with for the latest updates on the ski season down under.
