Mammoth Mountain, CA, May 19, 2001--The U.S. Men's Alpine Ski Team is in the midst of an on-snow training camp at Mammoth Mountain, but it feels more like a session in a sauna.

Saturday, the coaches were on the lift around 7 a.m. and the athletes followed shortly after. It was already over 50 degrees then and the temperature ballooned up to almost 70 by lunchtime. Sunblock and lots of water were the key necessities, not only for the coaches, staff and athletes, but also for the public as Mammoth is still open for unbelievable spring skiing.

After a ride up Chair 1 to Chair 3, the U.S. Team went through a short giant slalom course to work on technique. Some, including Thomas Vonn (Newburgh, NY), the '01 overall Chevy Truck Super Series champion, were testing equipment. A second, longer GS course was set futher down the mountain. After completing this course, the skiers reloaded the lift and did it all again.

In addition to GS training, a super G course was set on the St. Anton run. Erik Schlopy (Park City, UT), a slalom specialist, was one of many running the super G course. After super G and GS training, Schlopy ran some slalom drills with coach Martin Anderson.

The camp, which goes until early next week, has been extremely successful thus far. Most of the Team, including Jakub Fiala (Frisco, CO), ChadFleischer (Vail, CO), Sacha Gros (Vail, CO), Chip Knight (Stowe, VT), Casey Puckett (Aspen, CO), Daron Rahlves (Sugar Bowl, CA), Tom Rothrock(Cashmere, WA) and Marco Sullivan (Tahoe City, CA) have spent time on snow at the camp. Members of the development squad are also training at Mammoth.

The U.S. Women's Alpine Team, as well as the U.S. Snowboard Team, are also at Mammoth for training.
