BORMIO, Italy (AP)--Defending champion Bode Miller lost a ski Thursday during the downhill portion of the combined in the Alpine Skiing World Championships and was eliminated from the event.

Miller, who won the super-G to open the competition on Saturday, had his ski come loose just after landing a short jump on the top part of the Stelvio course.

To the delight of the fans, the American completed most of the course on one ski, even dropping into the tuck position on occasion, before eventually falling to the snow in exhaustion shortly before the finish.

``I felt fine,'' Miller said. There was nothing I could do. The binding was fine.''

Miller won the gold medal in the combined at the 2003 worlds in St. Moritz. The combined adds the times from one downhill run and two slalom runs.
