Janet,
There are several places near Boone and Blowing Rock. My favorite in that area is Sugar Mountain. Quite a few terrain options for a small mountain and even a chute at the top.
Beech is also good with a bit more vertical, and Appalachian does a great job of making it easy to rent and get on the mountain.
For more vertical, consider Snowshoe in West Virginia, but quite a bit more of a drive.
Happy Trails, Nate

Janeywho,
My personal favorite is App Ski Mtn. Although it is not very steep, the snow quality always seems to be great and they really put the customer first and are now building another slope for beginners. If you have a family or first time skiers I recommend that you take them there because it should not overwhelm them and it has somthing fro every level of skier. Also Cataloochie in Maggie Valley is good also they just more chair lifts. Happy Skiing!!

I like Cataloochee in Maggie Valley for it's proximity to Atlanta. It is about three hours from downtown atlanta.

That's kind of a loaded question. Like asking "who was the tallest munchkin in Wizard of Oz".

Sugar is nice. Really crowded on holidays. Also come early, the best time is when it opens. Seems everyone does the half day after 12. They have night skiing all the way to the top, which is a 1.5 mile run to the bottom. They usually open Thanksgiving week.

theyve all got their plusses and minuses
Sugar has great terrain but it's got slow lifts and the staff is apathetic at best if not sometimes outright hostile, it's crowded on weekends during the day and its expensive regardless, but it gives over 1000 feet of vertical, I suggest going on weekdays
Beech is an all around blast, really nice staff, not as much vertical and the runs are a little bit shorter but youll get in more runs per day because their lift is much much faster. Theyre never that crowded except on holidays and they always have good deals and discounts during the week.
Cataloochee is my home mtn becuase it's the closest, I love it, and the staff is nice. Theyve got crazy snowmaking capacity and arent afraid to use it. Terrain isnt quite up to what beech and sugar offer but its fun nonetheless
