Portland, ME, Nov. 2, 2000 (SAM Magazine)--According to the Associated Press, after a20-year battle, the National Park Service andSaddleback Mountain have come to an agreement on thefate of a 3.1-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trailthat crosses Saddleback.

In exchange for 1,115 acresand a scenic easement protecting another 320 acres,Saddleback will receive $4 million from the government. The battle first came about after Saddleback declaredits intention of developing the backside of themountain for skiing.

The National Park Service objectedto the plan because skiers would have to access the newterrain by crossing the trail and because new liftswould obstruct the views.
