Rad ski style

SKI Magazine. October 1986.

Freestylers have always been skiing’s outlaws – wilder, hipper, hotter – with their own style, their own lingo and a charisma that puts them on the sport’s leading edge. With freestyle the newest event in the next Olympics, hot-dogging is once again in the limelight. And so are the freestylers.

Enter Marshall Wells, Scott Ogren and Nelson Carmichael, red-hot members of the 1987 U.S. World Cup Freestyle Team. At 21, they’re the perfect embodiment of the energy in freestyle skiing today – young, fearless, fun.

Rad ski style in action

I met these freestylers last April at the USSA National Freestyle Championships, and they agreed to model some of this season’s most outrageous – or in their words, “dialed in” – suits in action for these pages. The boys weren’t sure what they were in for, especially when they met their first can of hair mousse. After the initial terror and “Oh No’s” subsided, they jumped in and lived it with enthusiasm – and a lot of their enthusiasm was for the clothing you see on these pages.

Not for the timid, these suits and separates are designed to stand out. Brilliant colors, fantastic prints, dramatic silhouettes and radical styling combine with all the function and detailing you've come to expect in serious ski clothing.

You can see for yourself just how great the suits look in motion on the hill. Local Summit County beauties Jana and Laura, wearing some of the year's wildest styles for ladies, agree. In the words of today's freedoggers, it's Go Big or Go Home when it comes to clothing, competition - and even life.
