TELLURIDE, Colo. (March 26, 2003 - News Release) - Telluride's 16th annual Surf the Rockies end-of-season blowout kicks off Saturday, March 29. This week-long celebration is sure to be a blast with scantily clad skiers, on-mountain contests, incredible giveaways, and excellent spring skiing conditions.

The festivities begin with Subaru's Master the Mountain Program, March 29-30, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Any skiers and riders interested in improving their on-snow skills before the season ends can take advantage of free lessons with the Telluride Ski and Snowboard School. Get rid of those bad habits before it's too late! Sign up for free one-hour lessons and mountain tours at the Subaru Central Tent at the bottom of Lift 4. Atlas Snowshoes, Subaru's partner, will also be on hand to demo the latest snowshoes.

After their complimentary lessons, guests can enjoy live music with Travis Kidd from 1-3 p.m. at Gorrono Ranch, Telluride's mid-mountain restaurant. The action continues with the Men's Journal Alpine Adventure Fashion Show at 4:30 p.m. in Heritage Plaza. All fashion-savy skiers and riders can check out Telluride ski instructors showing off the latest Perry Ellis attire.

Telluride's first Punk and Pipe Jam takes place Sunday, March 30 at 10:30 a.m. All competitors in this half pipe contest receive discounted $39 ski passes, as well as the chance to win brand new skis, snowboards, helmets, goggles, and more. After the contest, local band CDM shows why they're Telluride's favorite punk rock posse. Helmets are required for practice and competition, and are optional for the concert! Call (970) 728-7448 or email punkandpipejam@yahoo.com for more information. Atomic and Volkl demo trucks will be set up at the base of lift 4 for riders to to test the latest equipment.

To celebrate the end of the season, KOTO, Telluride's community radio station, throws the annual Main Street Dance on Friday, April 4 from 3:30-7 p.m. KOTO closes off Main Street in front of Telluride's historic courthouse for over three hours of live music with Ralph Dinosaur, beer drinking fun and food by Diggity Dogs.

Locals and guests alike get lei'd Saturday, April 5 during Telluride's Mountain Luau celebration. A mountain-wide beach ball hunt takes place all day long; find a marked beach ball while making turns and go home with a sweet prize. Live music by Rico Blues Project, drink specials, "beach volleyball," and fun events keep everyone busy from 11-3:30 p.m. at Gorrono. From the deck at Gorrono, guests can steal a glimpse of bikini and thong-clad racers at one of the hottest events of Surf the Rockies, the Bikini Slalom and Ski-A-Thong. The action starts at 12 p.m. on the Butterfly Ski Run. Participants showing their beach best can take home various prizes, including a season pass, Solomon jacket and Camelbacks. Registration starts at 10:30 a.m. at Gorrono.

"Spring has sprung, the sun is out, the skiing is unbelievable," said Gregg Bagni, marketing geek for Telluride Ski & Golf Company (Telski). "Where else could you see people skiing in bikinis and thongs...only in Telluride."

At 1:30 p.m., local bartenders compete in the Bacardi Cocktail Conquest. It's easy to pour drinks in the bar, but this contest measures those skills on the slopes. Bartenders compete in a wacky obstacle course and mix concoctions using new Bacardi flavors. Prizes include a 2003/2004 ski pass, cash, Solomon jacket, and Camelbacks. The awards don't end there; the cocktail fashioned by the most creative drink slinger will be named the Featured Drink at Gorrono for the 2003/2004 season. The Children's Snow Castle Building Contest follows at 2:30 p.m. at Gorrono. Prizes will be awarded to the best pint-sized snow engineers.

The season ends on Sunday, April 6 with true Telluride funk and flair as skiers and riders hit the slopes decked out in crazy ski attire and wacky costumes. After they've made their last turns of the season, skiers and boarders head to Wildflour for an end of the season bash. The Wildflour, located at the base of the gondola, serves up drink specials, good cheer, music and an outdoor barbeque.

Guests can enjoy excellent spring skiing in Telluride with affordable vacation packages. Four nights lodging and three days incredible spring skiing start at $330* per person (valid 3/30-4/6/03).
