Have children? Come to Beaver Creek. Its charming, pedestrian-only village sits peacefully at the top of a private access road, making it the perfect home base from which to explore the Vail Valley. Unhindered by auto traffic, you can let the kids run free throughout the stone-and-log village without having to worry about their safety. And there's so much for families to do. Hit the Beaver Lake Trail, beginning just past the Beaver Creek Chapel, for a mellow 3 1/2-mile hike to beautiful Beaver Lake. Or you can venture farther afield on a one- or multiple-day llama trek with Paragon Guides (970-926-5299). Need some rest? Drop the kids off at the Kids Summer Camp (970-845-5464), where they can make friends while learning the basics of rock climbing, mountain biking or spelunking.

Meanwhile, schedule a spa treatment at the Hyatt's Allegria Spa (970-748-7500), or set off on your own mountain adventure. Ride Centennial Express to Spruce Saddle for a round of disc golf. Then hike or bike back down to Beaver Creek Village and cool off with a cocktail on the sunny deck at slopeside Rendezvous. Come evening, dine rink-side at Toscanini while the kids make laps on the year-round Black Family Ice Rink in the center of the village. Once they're too tired to squirm, treat them to a production of "The Three Little Pigs" or "The Wizard of Oz" at the state-of-the-art Vilar Center (970-845-8497), which features an impressive schedule of performances for children and adults throughout the year.

  • DON'T MISS
  • A 2-mile ride up Shrine Mountain Pass for gourmet lunch at the Shrine Mountain Inn, followed by the 10-mile coast to Red Cliff, where you catch a free shuttle back to the resort.
  • BEST DEAL
  • For $2,300, families get five nights' lodging, adult activities and camp for the kids. Call (888) 340-9831, or visit www.beavercreek.com
