Big Sky Resort made the decision early Friday morning to open the Explorer lift for one day of skiing on the lower mountain for Sunday November 3rd from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The lift will access Lower Mr. K with over 600 feet of Big Sky?s 4,350 feet of vertical.

Cool temperatures helped snowmaking operations fire up in the base area of Big Sky Resort on Tuesday, October 29th. Big Sky residents woke to 5 inches of new snow in the plaza on Monday with continued snow through Wednesday. Big Sky has received 14 inches of snow since mid-September. With temperatures hovering around 10 degrees Fahrenheit, the conditions are ideal to make light, dry snow with Big Sky?s extensive snowmaking operation.

The lift ticket price will be $20 and season passes will be for sale and honored. Frequency cardholders will be able to ski for half price. Conditions will be on groomed man-made snow with a 15-inch base.

Services will be limited for this one-day winter ski teaser, but ski rental and retail items will be available through Big Sky Sports in the Mountain Mall.

This one day opening is true to form for Big Sky Resort who has had several extra ski days added to its seasons over the last few years. Big Sky opened on October 16th in 2001 on natural snow following a three foot storm and then again on June 14th later that year."We are all skiers", said resort general manager Taylor Middleton. "When the opportunity presents itself, and it seems to more and more, we like to open the mountain. After all, I want to go skiing like everyone else."

Strong snowmaking opportunities not only guarantee good skiing conditions for opening day, but provide a secure base in the spring which is important because Big Sky will stay open through Easter Sunday, April 20th. Big Sky will stay open for skiing longer than all other ski resorts in Montana and Wyoming
