Eagle River, MI, Mar. 17--The developers of MountBohemia, a proposed ski area planned for the northernmost point onMichigan's Upper Peninsula, faced a passionate crowd of hundreds Wednesdaynight during a public hearing on a federal block grant application. Thecrowd was reportedly split 50-50 between supporters and critics of theresort.

At issue was the developer's request to Keweenaw County to apply for a$900,000 federal grant to install a water and sewer system at the base ofthe lakeside resort. Critics are afraid the resort will not attract enoughbusiness to be viable, but the developer, a division of CrosswindsCommunities, disagrees.

Representatives say Mount Bohemia will provide 60jobs to the sparsely populated region and could bring as much as $60million to the local economy in the first five years of operation. Now thecounty must decide whether to apply for the federal funds as the local
