Extreme Skiing Gets Extremer
[ September 30, 2009 - 12:13pm ]
Take freeskiing, add parachute, nail 500-foot cliff drops
When you're racing down the hill or pumping through the powder on skis, do you ever wish you also had a parachute strapped to your back? Us neither. But apparently these guys did -- and in doing so invented the new sport of speed flying. Also called "speed riding," speed flying basically takes the extremes of freeskiing and adds the mobility and flyability of a paraglider -- making 500-foot cliff jumps just another trick in the bag. Riders use sport-specific gliders to reach speeds up over 65 miles an hour. Oh, and one last thing: Unlike other air-based sports, speed flyers tend not to carry a reserve chute. Good luck!
