Here’s a new angle on marital bonding. Carry your wife through an obstacle course and win her weight in beer and five times her weight in cash at the 10th annual North American Wife Carrying Championships this weekend. The annual event attracts 2,000 or more spectators to Maine’s Sunday River ski resort. Two-person teams—there’s no requirement that teams be married—navigate a 278-yard race course, with one team member carry the other from start to finish. Best time wins. Technique is key, with the Estonian Carry (the woman hangs upside down with her arms wrapped around the husband’s waist and her legs draped over his shoulders) often winning the day. A time penalty is added if the wife is dropped—with further penalties most certainly assessed back home.
