Sunday River opens for 2009-10 season

Sunday River won the snowmaking race in September and today became the first Eastern resort to open for the season, beating even its own opening date from last year by almost two weeks. This is the third year in a row that Sunday River has taken the prize in the East, opening on Halloween in both 2007 and 2008.

The resort received three inches of snow yesterday and produced enough man-made snow to open the upper portion of Locke Mountain to advanced skiers, who get to ski for free today until 3:30 p.m. Lift access will start tomorrow at 9 a.m. and continue through Sunday. The resort will close for the week and  likely reopen the following weekend. Lift tickets will cost $25.

If that's not a good reason to play hooky, I don't know what is.
