Unwanted skis would be saved from the landfill

We love a good ski swap: All the neon, the 210-cm Olins, the leather boots. But swaps are also an excellent place to be a responsible citizen. Instead of dumping your elderly Dynastars or your last year's K2s, you're effectively recycling them, giving them a new life with a new owner. But even the most beloved ski's life must come to an end someday, and sadly, that end usually comes at the landfill.

But what if it didn't have to? Thanks to Outside Magazine we bring you this great idea: full-on ski recycling. In 2008 the Snowsports Industries of America collected unwanted gear -- skis, boards and boots -- at ski shops around Colorado and put them through a multistep process to separate out their recyclable plastic and metal parts. The program will continue this year, and SIA hopes to make the whole process carbon neutral. At least now when you say goodbye to your Kneissels, you'll know a better future awaits them.
