UPDATE: Fredrik Ericsson, who's attempting to summit and ski down K2, had to turn back to base camp from just below Camp 4 yesterday.

UPDATE (7.27.2010): Ericsson and Cook had to abandon their quest to ski from the summit of K2 down to base camp yesterday due to weather. They stopped short of Camp 4, at what Cook believed to be around 25,591 feet, and determined that the conditions were not favorable enough for their continued ascent. They arrived at about 8:00 P.M. Pakistan Time, giving them only two hours to make it to the shoulder by 10:00 P.M. That window was not enough time for them to rest, rehydrate, and be prepared for the summit ahead, so they headed back to base camp.

When SKI contributor Steve Friedman visited Krasnaya Polyana in 2004, the monkey (pictured), whose sash reads “instructor,” sometimes changed costumes, appearing alternatively as a snow maiden or a diminutive horned devil.

One woman’s mammoth ski mission starts at Mammoth.

The last day of an extra long winter for Mammoth Mountain, first day of a year-long winter for me. I’m kicking off my global skiathon to benefit disabled sports organizations around the world. I aim to increase exposure, raise awareness and funding for adaptive ski programs through my efforts. Every cent donated will go directly to the organizations, and I plan to add to the list as I travel, helping the local mountain programs wherever I go.

Are they the future?

Our sister magazine, Skiing, launched the demo of their new digital product, Skiing Interactive, yesterday.  Designed to be fully interactive, and to encorporate multiple media, the demo highlighted personalized gear finders, video content and interactive maps.  According to Tom James, the magazine's editorial director, "Skiing Interactive concentrates on new methods for telling stories while involving the user with info-graphics, interactive maps, dynamically controlled imagery and more.”

The claim: A small, custom-molded plastic mouthguard can make you a stronger, more powerful skier. SKI Magazine's fitness editor puts the device to the test.

After years as a fitness and gear editor, my gimmick meter is finely tuned. I've read and listened to countless product pitches that make wild and improbable claims, and I've become pretty good at sussing out the legit from the ludicrous.

Massage
Few things are better than an apres-ski massage, but here's the rub: It might not be as good for your sore muscles as you thought.
Thumbnail Image:

Muscle pain and skiing often go hand in hand. Lucky for us, so do spas and ski resorts. After a long day on the slopes, you needn't look far for a relaxing, rejuvenating spa treatment. And while there's no denying a full-body massage feels good, new research suggests it might not do for your body what you've always thought.

Big Wave Skiing
Salomon athletes Townsend and Douglas notch first descents on Maui breakers—and almost look good doing it.

Skiers have long wondered what to do with themselves in the summer months. Well, this caught our eye.

Cody Townsend and Mike Douglas (the, uh, “godfather of freeskiing”) have combined their loves and skiing and surfing to create something altogether new: wave-skiing. Makes you wonder why no one’s ever tried it before.

Give Dad a rare gift this Sunday: a ski day in June.
Thumbnail Image:

It’s the middle of June and, for most people, ski season has been overtaken by warm weather and summer fun. But for the residents living on Vancouver Island up in British Columbia, Mount Washington is giving them one last shot at getting some turns in on the white stuff. Due to an unseasonably wet and cool spring, the Mount Washington Alpine Resort has enough snow to re-open one run, Linton’s Loop, for the Father’s day weekend this Saturday and Sunday.
