Opening Day at Winter Park 2009
Vail, Heavenly, Winter Park and Eldora all open this week

Thanksgiving Week is traditionally opening week for many ski resorts. But thanks to some big early season storms, a number of resorts opened early this year -- Sunday River, Maine; Mammoth Mountain, Calif.; Mount Snow, Vt.; and Loveland and Arapahoe Basin, Colo., to name a few. Let's add a few more to that list: Winter Park, Colo., opened this past week, and last we heard a bunch of diehards were camping out at Vail last night to await first chair on Vail's opening day. Snowbird is hoping to open big in Utah today. Out in California, Heavenly Mountain Resort had planned to drop the gates this morning, but big winds forced the opening a day back. (The good news: Those big winds are bringing a big storm, with an expected foot of snow.) And just up the coast in Washington State, Mt. Bachelor is opening, oh, four hours from right now. But the most important opening to all of us here at SKI has to be our little home hill, Eldora Mountain Resort, a mere 40-minute drive from the SKI Magazine parking lot. We're gonna guess it'll be an early day at the office for a few folks around here.
