Mongolia Opens First Ski Resort

Sky Resort
Five runs, two chairlifts, two ropetows and one black diamond, all for $12. Welcome to Mongolia's brand new Sky Resort.

Some of us over at SKI Magazine are what you'd call armchair travelers. Sure, we get out in ski country -- from Aspen to Zermatt -- but the closest we've come to a truly global, truly fish-out-of-water ski experience is skiing in Korea. But ever since watching the TV documentary Long Way Round -- in which move stars Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman ride motorcycles literally around the world, through Western and Eastern Europe and into remotest Asia -- we've had a deep desire to get to Mongolia. And now maybe here's our chance. Sky Resort, that country's first ski resort, has opened just outside of Mongolia's capital, Ulaanbaatar. It's a little one, with just five runs, two lift, two ropetows and only one quote-unquote black diamond, but definitely worth any world skier's life list. A full day of skiing will set you back just $12, which is still big bucks to the locals. But hold off on your reservations until spring. The predicted high for the week before Christmas was 1°F, with a low of -29°F. Better stay in the yurt.

Thanks to travel blog for the heads-up.
