Lindsey Vonn's New Vail Run

[ March 3, 2010 - 3:51pm ]
Vail has renamed an expert run after the Olympic star.

So maybe Lindsey Vonn didn't live up to the oversized pre-Olympic expectations. (The New York Times Magazine, for one, hoped she'd take five gold medals.) And we didn't get to use our favorite wannabe headline: "It's the Vonn-couver Olympics!" But Lindsey did crush the downhill and storm the super G, giving her one gold and one bronze -- a terrific haul for any Olympic athlete -- and she is the winningest American female skier of all time, with back-to-back overall World Cup wins, 31 total World Cup wins and two World Championships. So, being a proud product of Vail Mountain, after her family moved these in the late '90s, she entirely deserves this latest accolade: Vail has renamed the International expert run; henceforth it shall be known as Lindsey's. The trail, a groomed bomber run, was the site of the women's speed events during the World Alpine Ski Championships at Vail and Beaver Creek in 1989 and 1999. Budding racers can now be like Linds on the slope, and maybe Vail can take home another gold in 10 or 20 years' time.
