Derby Days at Loveland
[ April 16, 2010 - 5:47pm ]
600 amateur racers from the U.S. and abroad gather at Loveland Ski Area in Colorado this weekend to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Loveland Derby.
The Loveland Derby, the largest amateur ski race in the U.S., runs this weekend, April 16–18 at Colorado’s Loveland Ski Area. Racers ranging in age from 9 to 20 will compete in this USSA-sanctioned event, sponsored by the Loveland Race Club. Olympians such as Billy Kidd, Sara Schleper and Spider Sabich all raced the Loveland Derby in their early careers.
Slalom races begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Loveland. From noon to 3 p.m., skiers and spectators are welcome to participate in a costumed fun race. On Sunday, the slalom action continues from 9 a.m. to noon, followed by a pond skimming competition at 1 p.m.
