Wines chilling at Taste of Vail
Wining and dining at 10,000 feet is a rite of spring at Vail, and a tasty way to cap off the ski season. From the Belgian Beer Lunch to the Aphrodisiac Food seminar, the weekend long event served up good times and great food. The best event: The Mountain Top picnic.

As an Aspenite, I could get skewered for saying this, but one of my all-time favorite foodie events is the Mountaintop Picnic held during the Taste of (gulp) Vail.

winter park spring splash
Winter Park is among several of Colorado's ski resorts bidding farewell to winter this weekend.

It’s a bittersweet time. As the days grow longer and warmer, the snow slowly melts away, and another ski season ends. But, there’s still time for one last hurrah.

This weekend, several of Colorado’s ski resorts will close for the season: Vail, Copper Mountain and Winter Park. And how will Winter Park mark the occasion? With live music and pond skimming, of course.

ski resorts cautious
It’s not a boom, but it’s no bust either. Early attendance numbers provide a glimmer of hope to struggling ski resorts.

Many people have bemoaned recent signs foretelling the impending death of the ski industry. First, environmentalists predicted that global warming will melt both the polar ice caps and our mountain snow caps by the end of the century.

ski patrol olympics
Squaw Valley hosts the first ever Ski Patrol Olympics April 16-18.

Ski patrol performs some pretty gnarly tasks: transporting injured skiers down the mountain at high speeds, detonating explosives to prevent avalanches and leading search and rescue missions on formidable terrain. This weekend at California’s Squaw Valley, patrollers from across North America will showcase their skills in the first ever Professional Ski Patrol Olympics. Contenders will compete for prizes and a $1,500 cash purse, courtesy of Helly Hansen.

Lindsey Vonn Portrait
Lindsey Vonn set to appear on NBC's "Law & Order"

As they say in Hollywood: There are no small parts, only small actors. Olympic gold medalist and World Cup overall champion Lindsey Vonn certainly isn’t too proud to play a bit role on her favorite television series: NBC’s "Law & Order." In fact, according to her Facebook page she’s on her way to New York City to begin filming: “I'm so excited I can hardly stand it.”

a taste of vail main
This ain’t no chili cook-off. This famous fest, running April 8–10, caters to the gourmet crowd.

For 20 years, Colorado’s Vail Resort has been perfecting the art of the culinary festival with an annual event that routinely attracts more than 30 chefs and sommeliers and more than 50 wineries. However, Taste of Vail is not simply an elegant excuse for tasting delicious wines and dishes prepared by some of country’s top chefs, it’s meant to be an educational experience as well. This year, the festival features some exciting new seminars.

Snowmass Ski Patrol testing out 9 inches in spring storm
How does six feet in two days sound? Many resorts extend their spring skiing season as snow blankets much of the West.

Resorts in Nevada, Colorado, Utah and California, amoung other places, have extended their seasons after a rash of spring storms blanketed their slopes in more snow than some have seen all season. Aspen Mountain, which was slated to close this Sunday, will open its lifts for the weekends of April 17–18 and April 24–25 after getting 16 inches of snow in the past 72 hours.
