Spring Gruv 2
Spring Break—alpine style.

If you’d rather spend your Spring Break skiing than sunning yourself on a beach with a bunch of boozey college students, you’re not alone.

I-70 at Glenwood Canyon re-opens
Almost four days after a massive rock slide closed a key Colo. I-70 ski corridor, traffic was flowing again in both directions. Extensive repairs are still needed, but a 200-mile detour is no longer required to drive to the Aspen valley and Steamboat region.

Traffic started flowing again at 3:05 pm Thursday through a key segment of Colo. 1-70 as crews had worked around the clock to open the damaged 17-mile "choke point" in the highway system. More repairs are still needed to open all four lanes of traffic, and the speed limit has been reduced to 40 mph from 55 mph, with loads wider than 14 feet prohibited from the roadway. A rockslide early Monday over the Hanging Lakes section of I-70, just before Glenwood Springs, had closed the highway, spewing boulders—some the size of semi-tractors and weighing up to 66 tons—onto the roadway. Lindsey Vonn in Lake Louise
American racer wins third straight World Cup overall title, joins elite ranks of skiers.

Lindsey Vonn, the new superstar of American skiing, captured her third consecutive World Cup overall title today by winning the super G at the World Cup Finals in Garmisch, Germany. The World cup overall title is considered the highest honor in ski racing, as it reflects excellence across all disciplines throughout the entire season.

lindsey, red bull hat
Could Lindsey Vonn be the new face of professional sports? And she's not done for the season: Though Vonn crashed in today's GS race in Germany, she could win her record third-straight overall World Cup title with a top-seven finish in Friday's super G.

Unless you are a ski racing fan, chances are you had never even heard of Lindsey Vonn until two months ago. Today, as Lindsey’s stylish, well-coifed marketing machine rolls across network airtime, other Olympians can only hold up their hands in surrender.

Steamboat Ski Resort/Larry Pierce

Could the University of Denver ski team take home its third Championship win in a row?

For anyone in Steamboat Springs, Colo. this week, keep an eye out: You could spot America's next Bode Miller or Lindsey Vonn.

The 2010 NCAA Skiing Championship opened today at Mt. Werner at Steamboat Resort and Howelsen Hill Ski Area, hosted by the University of Colorado at Boulder. Now in its 57th year, the event brings together 22 college ski teams from across the country for four days of Alpine and Nordic skiing competitions.

Bode Miller Withdraws
Opens the door for Lindsey: With five World Cup races this weekend, she can clinch the title of Winningest American Ever.

With all the talk at the Olympics of a certain shapely—and amply exposed—shin, bare mention was made of another American hopeful’s sore and bothersome lower leg.

Lindsey Vonn's winning routine
Olympic gold- and bronze-medalist is poised to take her third straight women's overall World Cup title after tomorrow's downhill race in Germany.

Skiing's World Cup finals are starting this week in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, and you'll never guess who's the big favorite for the women's overall. Perhaps you've heard of her: 2010 Olympics gold- and bronze-medalist, already a two-in-a-row World Cup overall winner, has about 30-odd career World Cup wins... That's right, we're talking about a certain Ms. Lindsey Vonn.

Winter Storm causes travel frustration
Got your spring ski trip all lined up? Don't forget to keep on top of weather warnings, which can kill even the best-planned trips.

Winter storm warnings can be a happy sign your ski vacation is going to be a good one. But they can also mean a delay -- or, at worst, the end -- of a long-planned and long-anticipated trip to the hills. And now things are getting worse. As the rough economy has shrunk demand for travel, airlines have shrunk their capacity for travelers. And as that capacity has shrunk, the New York Times reports, the airlines' ability to accommodate weather-stranded travelers has also receded.

Lindsey Vonn Wheaties Cover
Olympic golden girl Vonn takes her turn on the Wheaties box.

Lindsey Vonn is one hot item these days, from the front of Sports Illustrated to Jay Leno's hot seat to coffee-klatching with Ellen DeGeneres—while skiing to one gold and one bronze medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games in between. But her latest appearance, in mid-turn on the cover of a Wheaties box, seems appropriate. After all, General Mills has been featuring world-class athletes on boxes of Wheaties cereal since Lou Gehrig in 1934. Vonn's not the only Vancouver star taking her turn on the orange box.
