Rahlves in Doubt for Downhill

BORMIO, Italy, Dec. 27, 2003 (AP) -- Daron Rahlves injured his right knee during downhill training, jeopardizing his chances of skiing in Sunday's World Cup race.

Rahlves, who won one downhill in Bormio last season and finished third in another, was hurt Saturday when he slammed into one of the last gates on the demanding Stelvio course.

The American was helped to his feet after collapsing in the finish area. Rahlves does not know how badly his knee is injured.

"It's all black and blue," he said. "I can't feel it right now."

Rahlves was disqualified for failing to navigate the gate he crashed into and will start 31st Sunday if he can race.

Austria's Peter Rzehak had the top qualifying time of 2 minutes, 1.36 seconds. Rahlves' teammate Bode Miller was seventh and overall World Cup leader Hermann Maier was ninth.

A snowstorm forecast for Saturday night in this resort near the Swiss border could force organizers to move the race to Monday.

Bormio will host the world championships in 2005.
