GETTING THERE From Boston (3 1/2 hours): I-95 north to Exit 11 in Maine, then Route 26 north to Bethel, then Route 2 east to the Sunday River access road.
DINING OUT On a budget: In Bethel, try Mother's (207-824-2589) for family-friendly fare; Moose's Tale (207-824-3541), located in the Sunday River Brewing Co., for ribs, burgers and very good beer; Sud's Pub (207-824-6558), downstairs in the Sudbury Inn, for light meals. Money is No Object: Victoria Inn (207-824-8060) for fine dining in a romantic setting.
SLEEPING IN (All rates are per person, based on double occupancy.) An affordable option on the mountain is the Snow Cap Inn ($90-$170 for standard room with lift ticket; 800-543-2754). Both the Grand Summit and the Jordan Grand offer slopeside accommodations ranging from hotel rooms to three-bedroom condos ($80-$160 for standard room with lift ticket; 800-543-2754). Almost on-mountain is the Sunday River Inn, with dorm and private rooms and a ski-lodge ambience ($45-$85 includes breakfast, dinner and cross-country pass; 207-824-2410). Bethel has a wealth of inns, including the Victoria (rooms from $89-$259, breakfast included; 888-774-1235); the Briar Lee (rooms from $79-$119, breakfast included; 877-311-1299); the Chapman Inn ($30 in the dorm or $65-$125 for a room, breakfast included; 207-824-2657) and the Bethel Inn and Country Club ($99-$149 per person, breakfast and dinner included, three-night minimum; 207-824-2175).
DIVERSIONS The White Cap Fun Center (207-824-5969) at the White Cap base area has an arcade, lighted tubing park and skating rink, snowshoe rentals and tours and live music and dancing. There are fireworks displays Thursday and Saturday evenings. The Black Diamond Family Entertainment Series (207-824-3575) presents shows on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Snowcat rides (207-824-5100 ext. 4382) depart nightly from both hotels. BMW driving tours (207-824-5332) are available at both hotels. In Bethel, the Big Adventure Center (207-824-0929) has indoor laser tag, miniature golf and rock climbing.
