Park City, UT, Nov. 16, 2000--Austrian Brigitte Obermoser took a 1.29-second lead Thursday in the first run of a sun-splashed WorldCup women's giant slalom on the first day of the Chevy Truck America's Opening races at Park City Mountain Resort. Kirsten Clark(Raymond, ME), coming out of No. 64 start, and Kristina Koznick (Burnsville, MN) were the only U.S. skiers to reach the second run.
Obermoser crushed the C.B.'s Run course - the 2002 Olympic GS run - to finish in 1:22.54. Teammate Karine Koellerer, starting 49th,was second in 1:23.83 with Anja Paerson of Sweden third (1:23.91).
Koznick, who trained apart from the U.S. team, was 17th with a time of 1:24.77.
Clark, normally a downhill and super G racer who focused more on GS during the preseason training, qualified last week for the GS andstormed out of the back of the pack to finish 23rd in 1:25.13.
Caroline Lalive (Steamboat Springs, CO) finished 54th in the first run while Sarah Schleper (Vail, CO) and Julia Mancuso (Tahoe City,CA) skied off course.
