La Nina is Back and Ready for Action

La Nina is Back and Ready for Action

Boulder, CO, August 6--Look out! The latest from the weather station reports that La Nina is sticking around at least until February.

Forecasters from the Climate Prediction Center in Washington, D.C. are calling for last season's trends of precipitation to continue through February 2000. These trends, if you remember, brought less snow to much of ski country and gobs of snow to the lucky remainder.

"We do see a continuation of La Nina," explained Anthony Artusa, a meteorologist for the Climate Prediction Center. "We see a trend of below-average temperatures and above-average precipitation for most of the Northern Rockies."

Things are more uncertain for the Southern Rockies. "We see trends pointing toward warmer temperatures overall for the Southern Rockies," he added. "But, we can't predict the precipitation levels." So, it could be more like some of the La Nina's in the past that brought mild temperatures, but still plenty of powder.

Things could also go either way in the Northeast region. Artusa said that area will most likely experience normal winter temperatures, and the precipitation forecast is unsure. Normal temperatures in New England are cold and ripe for snowfall.

Artusa also told SkiNet the Climate Prediction Center foresees that the Pacific Northwest will have a similar winter as last year. So, if you're looking to experience more snow than you ever have before, you might want to schedule a trip to the Northwest.

Whether these predictions are dead on, only the future can tell. But meteorologists do see cooler than normal ocean temperatures in the equatorial Pacific that indicate the presence of La Nina.
