Park City, UT, Jan. 22, 2002 -- Todd Lodwick of Steamboat Springs, CO and Bill Demong of Vermontville, NY, who have each won a World Cup this season, headline a group of seven nordic combined skiers nominated Tuesday to compete in the 2002 Olympics, the U.S. Ski Team announced.

Head Coach Tom Steitz said the group includes four 1998 Olympians. Lodwick, who won the fifth World Cup of his career in December and will be competing in his third Olympics, and Demong, who won a World Cup Sunday in the Czech Republic--plus two other Steamboat Springs skiers, Johnny Spillane and Kristoffer Erichsen. In addition, Matt Dayton (Breckenridge, CO), Jed Hinkley (Andover, NH) and Carl Van Loan (Webster, NH) were named to the Olympic Team.

Selection was based on international results, Steitz said. "This is, without question, our strongest nordic combined Olympic Team. Two guys have won and another one Dayton has been top-5 in a World Cup. We think it's very realistic for us to be looking for our best results--and it's not a stretch to be thinking about a medal."
