Collingwood, Ontario, Canada Dec. 7--Intrawest Corporation and Blue Mountain Resort have reached an agreement to transform the small, regional area near Toronto into a four-season destination resort. The crux of the plan is a new Village at Blue Mountain's base.

Intrawest's master plan for the village calls for the development of some 1,200 condominium and hotel units and up to 100,000 square-feet of retail space. The village will consist of three plazas that will harbor 60-70 shops and restaurants, and 840 single-family lots and town-homes to surround the nearby Monterra Golf Coarse. The development of the Village at Blue Mountain will cost approximately $550 million.

"We are receiving overwhelming support for Blue's transformation," reported Intrawest vice president of resort development, Craig Watters. "People understand our vision, they know our track record and they want to be a part of it."

In addition, the coming years will bring more expansion to Blue Mountain including improved lift and snowmaking systems, expanded conference facilities, an indoor waterpark, and an outdoor ice rink.

Construction of the new Village at Blue Mountain is scheduled to begin this coming spring 2000, and be completed by the year 2010.

On Oct. 22, Intrawest introduced their first phase of the Village at Blue Mountain called Historic Snowbridge. The new housing complex was greeted with great enthusiasm, selling 40 homes in less than eight hours.

Some improvements began in Jan. 1999, immediately following Intrawest's acquisition of 50-percent of Blue Mountain, and will be in operation this season. Some of the new additions include the addition of a six-person, high-speed lift, a triple chairlift, increased snowmaking, and new grooming machines.
