Denver, CO, Nov. 7, 2001 (AP)--Colorado voters, concerned about a sagging economy, nixed a proposal that could have led to a $50 million monorail linking Denver with the state's mountain ski areas.

The proposal, voted down Tuesday, would have used surplus state funds to test technology for a 167-mile monorail along congested highways between Denver and the ski areas.

Supporters and opponents agreed economic uncertainty after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks doomed the proposal.

``Now that we're in crisis mode, people understand that building science-fiction rail devices isn't going to solve our problems,'' monorail opponent Jon Caldara said.
