Whistler/Blackcomb, BC Canada, Feb. 7-- On the heels of real-estate success stories at Copper Mountain, CO, and Tremblant, Quebec, Intrawest has announced a plan to improve Whistler's south base area. The new Whistler Creek will be a neighborhood located at the southernmost point of Whistler Mountain.

After three years of planning and consulting with the Resort Municipality of Whistler, Intrawest finally received approval for their Master Plan that will ultimately revitalize the area at the base of the Creekside Gondola.

"Years of planning and community consultation has brought us to today, the official unveiling of Whistler Creek," said Douglas Ogilvy, Whistler's VP of resort development. "There has been much speculation and interest and we are now looking forward to starting the project this spring."

Over the next 12 months, Intrawest will invest more than $50 million in the project and $80 million more over the next three years. The new neighborhood will include three condo-hotels, an intimate pedestrian walkway featuring restaurants and retail shops, a grocery store, and other year-round facilities for the neighborhood.

Construction on the first phase of the project is expected to begin this summer. This first phase will replace the day-skier facilities at the Creekside base and include a new Mountain Adventure Center retail and rental shop, an expanded Whistler Kids ski school facility, and a new Dusty's bar and grill. Legends will be the first of the new condo-hotels going up and is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2001.

Included in Intrawest's Comprehensive Development Strategy is a plan to build both additional resident housing and a second elementary school in Spring Creek, a development located two miles south of Whistler Creek. In addition, the community will receive 40-acres of land in four new parks as well as two-and-a-half miles of paved trail added to Whistler's Valley Trail System.

"Whistler Creek is the neighborhood where it all began," added David Perry, VP of marketing and sales for Whistler. "It was at Whistler Creek where Franz Wilhelmsen installed the first gondola to take guests up Whistler Mountain. I'm sure Franz and the other founders of Whistler Mountain would be impressed with how Whistler has evolved."
