MOUNTAINWOODS
THOMPSONVILLE, MICH.

Crystal Mountain in northwest Michigan offers some of the best skiing and resort living in the Midwest. This home, located in the MountainWoods residential area, is less than a mile from Crystal's slopes and overlooks the fairway of the Mountain Ridge golf course's first hole. Secluded in a forest of beech, maple and aspen, MountainWoods boasts privacy and tranquility on the backside of the ski area.

Designed for flexible mountain living-an ideal property for a large family-this 3,400-square-foot custom cedar home was built on a .65-acre lot in 1994 and was remodeled in 1997 when an office wing was added. There are four bedrooms and three bathrooms, giving parents, kids and guests plenty of room. When you enter the foyer, the kitchen to the left opens onto the dining and living rooms. Though these rooms are attached, large windows and vaulted ceilings lend a spacious feeling. On the garden level floor, you'll find two bedrooms, a large family room with a fireplace and a screened-in porch. There's a garage, which can accommodate two cars plus a golf cart, and there's additional storage space for skis, clubs and other toys. For some après-ski warmth after a cold day on the hill, head to the first floor sauna, or, at the end of a spring day, simply soak up the sun while relaxing outside on the home's upper or lower-level decks.

The owner of this property need not worry about overcrowding. Though there's one house next door, across the street-approximately 300 feet from the home's front door-outdoor lovers can enjoy the Michigan Legacy Art Park, a 30-acre preserve with walking, biking and cross-country ski trails.

PROS
This area, only a few miles from Lake Michigan is a choice summer spot with top-notch golf and sailing nearby. If this house doesn't fit the bill, but the area intrigues you, there are seven other MountainWoods lots still available. Association dues are only $160 per year, and owners of most lots will receive a credit of $3,500 toward Crystal Mountain Resort amenities. More important, owners will get 50 percent off ski season passes and 25 percent off golf memberships.

CONS
You certainly won't get the same all-inclusive resort experience at Crystal as you would at Vail, Colo. Dining at the resort itself is limited, but Traverse City, with many great restaurants, is 28 miles away and Benzonia is just a 10-minute drive.
