Lake Tahoe, Calif., may be known for great skiing, but what it lacks is slopeside accommodations. That's about to change at Kirkwood this season as the ski area gears up to become a destination resort. Highlighting its mountain village expansion are the unique Lost Cabin Townhomes, which, thanks to their prime location, seclusion and privacy, are going fast.
One of three townhomes is still available from Phase 1 (a total of nine units were built), and it, Unit No. 8, boasts great mountain views. Phase 2 is under construction with seven more units ready for occupancy this winter. The 1,775-square-foot townhome has 3 bedrooms and 3 1/2 baths spaced out on three floors. A 21st Century kitchen features modern GE appliances and slate flooring with radiant heat. The living room/kitchen area on the top floor look out onto the ski mountain through 9-foot floor-to-ceiling windows. A one-car garage (the Baby Boomer necessity) and a bedroom are on the ground level, while the other two bedrooms are on the middle floor. There's a mudroom for ski storage and private bathrooms are attached to each room. The master bath even has a whirlpool tub to help ease muscle pains after a tough day on Kirkwood's steep chutes.
Designed to emulate a freestanding ski house, Lost Cabin is particularly distinctive because of its cedar exterior, log finishes and private outside entrance. With views of both the slopes and the meadow, which offers 80 km of cross-country ski trails, the townhouses are situated just steps from Chair 6. Plus, they adjoin only on the sides-meaning no noise from neighbors above or below.
Kirkwood's owners are dedicated to turning this into a popular destination resort. That means you'll have a good chance of renting the townhome frequently if you choose to put it in property management. At buildout, the village will feature 300 to 400 condos and 20 to 30 shops and cafés, so everything will be right there.
At $220 a square foot, the townhomes are not cheap. You can find a 3-bedroom home in the area for $400,000 to $500,000, but it may not be slopeside. And, if you don't like schlepping up and down stairs in your ski boots-especially after a tiring day on the hill-then this might not be the best place for you.
