Crested Butte, CO, Sept. 15--Crested Butte is the latest Rocky Mountain town to wake up to an early snowfall. Last night, snow hit the higher elevations and sugar coated the peaks surrounding the southern Colorado town.
"It didn't snow in town, it only snowed at the high elevations," reported Rebecca Thompson of the Crested Butte Chamber of Commerce. "All the peaks around the area are pretty well covered, though."
Crested Butte is one of several spots in the Rocky Mountains that have seen snow in the past ten days. Jackson Hole, WY and Summit County, CO also received snow on their mountain peaks.
Snow in September is not new to Crested Butte. Temperatures often drop into the low-thirties this time of year, so that precipitation passing through the area often becomes snow.
The forecast in Crested Butte calls for partly cloudy skies with a chance of showers, so there might be more high country snow on the way.
Crested Butte is scheduled to open November 19, and offer it's famous month of free skiing through December 18.
