Sporting some of the most extreme ski terrain in North America, Crested Butte has long been a top spot for summer fun as well. Located off the beaten path in the beautiful Gunnison National Forest, Crested Butte offers summer activities for every traveler. Hike or bike the 900 miles of trails that wind through the Gunnison Valley and then stroll the colorful streets of a Victorian town that time forgot. The stunning, 360-degree views from the top of the 12,162-foot peak of Mt. Crested Butte are accessible via the Silver Queen lift and a 45-minute hike. If you prefer something a little faster, the Keystone lift services 15 miles of varied mountain biking terrain. Golfers can enjoy a round at the Crested Butte Country Club's Robert Trent Jones, Jr.-designed 18-hole course (970-349-6131), and feel the added boost of golfing at 9,003 feet.
The town hosts a number of summer festivals and events, including the Wildflower Festival in mid-July and the Western Slope Music Festival from mid-June to early July. Refuel at any number of surprisingly gourmet restaurants in town, including Timberline and Soupçon.
