Feb. 6, 2002 -- Today marks the first day of President and Mrs. Carter's Crested Butte Winter Weekend. The former President and his wife will in Crested Butte, CO as part of a fundraiser for the Atlanta-based Carter Center.

The center was founded by the Carter's 20 years ago to help promote peace and health worldwide. Today it wages peace and combats disease in 65 countries.

The couple will be on hand for an auction benefiting the Carter Center which will feature several items donated by the Carter themselves including a maple wood queen-sized four-poster bed made by President Carter himself. It is the largest item the former President has handcrafted to date.

Other items include:

-Two bottle of homemade wine made by Presidnet Carter.
-Several autographed photos of former presidents, including a rare 1973 photo of President and Mrs. Carter with Elvis Presley, autographed by President and Mrs. Carter; one autographed photo of five presidents (Nixon through Bush) with six first ladies (Johnson through Bush); one autographed photo of four presidents (Carter, Bush, Clinton, and Ford).
-Presidential surfboard with presidential seal.
-An official major league baseball signed by Roger Clemens.
-A guitar signed by Crosby, Stills and Nash.
-President Carter's embroidered cowboy boots, bearing his initials.
-Original drawing by Amy cart for her father's book "Christmas in Plains."
-A Kentucky Derby exclusive package, including tickets for the weekend on Millionaires Row, a VIP tour of the paddock and saddling area, and an interview on ESPN's pre-Derby show. -A Vern Hartvigson Memory Chest made of wood harvested for President and Mrs. Carter's home place.
