Francestown, N.H.--Dec. 17--Crotched Mountain, N.H., which closed nearly 10 years ago because of financial trouble, was sold at auction Wednesday to Terry Schnare of Bennington for a reported $123,000.
The sale accounts for about 300 acres of land, almost half the ski resort. The land, which includes the slopes, ski lodge and the former rentals building, is in arrears to the Francestown tax collector for about $82,000. Reportedly there is also a clause in the property's deed requiring the owner to pay the town a $50,000 penalty if the ski area is not opened by December 31, 1999. Schnare has said he and a group of partners are aware of the financial burdens of the land and hope to see the mountain reopened for skiing in the near future.
