Sunshine Village Gets Buried

Banff, Canada, Jan. 30 2004 — Skiers and boarders are in for a banner weekend at Sunshine Village as the popular Banff Ski Resort is digging out from an intense snowstorm that has left 22 cms of fresh snow in the past 24 hours and over 44 cms in the past 3 days.

It is still snowing very heavily at the resort today and Environment Canada has issued a Winter Storm Advisory that could see another +20 cms of fresh snowfall on the resort within the next 24 hours.

"With this new snow, we now have 105 out of 107 runs open and the two remaining runs (Cleavage and Delirium Dive) will open just as soon as the proper avalanche work is conducted," confirms John Ross, Sunshine's sales and Marketing Director. "This is the weather event of the season for us and we just can't wait to get all of our double black extreme terrain open. When this storm ends, our mountain operations team will open these extreme areas just as soon as humanly possible. The mountain is going to be in fabulous shape heading into February."

While much of Western Canada has been submersed in record setting cold temperatures for the past week, Sunshine Village has enjoyed much warmer weather as the moist Pacific flow has made it just as far as the Continental Divide. While Calgary shivered through another minus 30-degree day on Thursday Jan 29th, Sunshine Village recorded a high temperature of plus 2 degrees at the base of the gondola.

The current weather forecast calls for intense snow today and then mainly sunny skies for the next 4 days with high temperatures of around minus 10.
