Ongoing Snowmaking Upgrades at Crystal

THOMPSONVILLE, MI - (News Release - September 13, 2007) - Crystal Mountain continues to make substantial investments in snowmaking, nearly doubling the resort's production capability over the last six years.

This winter alone, Crystal is increasing its snowmaking capability by 30% with the purchase of additional snowguns and water pumping capacity. This latest investment is part of over $1.4 million worth of snowmaking improvements the resort has made over the last six years as part of its master plan, Emergent Directions.

Since 2001, Crystal Mountain has added 51 snowguns (68% increase) and increased its water pumping capacity from 3,200 gallons-per-minute to 6,000 gallons-per-minute (88% increase). These continued upgrades help increase the rate at which Crystal can open and maintain skiable terrain and maximize efficiency during critical snowmaking windows when temperatures dip below 28 degrees. Hypothetically, under ideal conditions Crystal is capable of covering its entire south-face with one-foot of snow in just 17 hours.

The investment in snowmaking technology not only impacts the slopes but the Michigan economy as well. Over the last six years, Snow Machines Inc, based in Midland, Michigan, has sold Crystal Mountain the majority of its snowguns and is helping the resort take its first step toward automating the snowmaking process. In addition, the installation of new snowmaking equipment has meant significant revenue for local contractors. What's more, snowmaking adds to the quality of Michigan's winter tourism product that represents one-third of the state's $17.5 billion a year tourism industry.

Celebrating over 50 years, Crystal is a family owned resort, featuring 45 downhill slopes, 40+ km of cross-country trails, 36 holes of championship golf, lodging, dining and IACC-approved conference facilities for groups of up to 400 people. SKI Magazine rated Crystal the #1 Resort in the Midwest in 2005.
