Ski team names starters for Park City

PARK CITY (USST report) - U.S. alpine coaches have finalized their lineups for the men's and women's giant slaloms and slaloms this week at the Chevy Truck America's Opening, which traditionally marks the start of continuous World Cup racing. Two Park City skiers - T.J. Lanning in GS, Bryon Friedman in slalom - will make their World Cup debut.

Men's Head Coach Phil McNichol, who already had announced seven starters for the men's GS Friday, said the U.S. Ski Team would have six men competing Sunday in the slalom, which concludes the weekend. "And we may add one, possibly two, others to the start list," McNichol said.

He said a decision would be made perhaps as late as race time on whether Bode Miller (Franconia, NH), who underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee last Friday with Dr. Richard Steadman in Vail, CO, will compete.

"The medical staff will check see everything's okay. If they're comfortable with his recovery, then fine," McNichol said. "It's a medical call, not my call, not Bode's."

Marjan Cernigoj, U.S. women's head coach, said there would be five American women racing Thursday in giant slalom, four Saturday in slalom at Park City Mountain Resort. All-rounder Caroline Lalive (Steamboat Springs, CO), who will race GS, will not race slalom while recuperating from a broken left index finger.

The U.S. lineups for the America's Opening races:

Thursday (women's GS) - Lalive, Sarah Schleper (Vail, CO), Kristina Koznick (Burnsville, MN), Kirsten Clark (Raymond, ME), and Julia Mancuso

Friday (men's GS) - Lanning*, Miller (if healthy), Erik Schlopy (Park City, UT), Thomas Vonn (Newburgh, NY), Daron Rahlves (Sugar Bowl, CA), Dane Spencer (Boise, ID), and Jake Zamansky (Carbondale, CO - made debut in Soelden, Austria, GS last month)

Saturday (women's SL) - Schleper, Koznick, Mancuso, Lindsey C. Kildow (also Vail)

Sunday (men's SL) - Miller (if healthy), Schlopy, Zamansky, Friedman*, Tom Rothrock (Cashmere, WA), and Chip Knight (Stowe, VT)

After Park City, the women head to the Chevy Truck Aspen Winternational in Colorado for super G and slalom while the men face the first speed races of the young season at the Winterstart World Cups at Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies.
