Steamboat Springs, Colo. Dec. 19, 2001 (AP)--World Cup leader Ronny Ackermann of Germany took charge midway through the second lap of the 7.5-kilometer race Tuesday for his third win of the season in a Nordic combined sprint event.

Ackermann beat Samppa Lajunen of Finland by 10.2 seconds.

Ackermann, fourth after the 114-meter jump, took the lead after Todd Lodwick of Steamboat Springs, fell on a downhill.

Lajunen, 10th after jumping, and Felix Gottwald of Austria, dueled through the middle of the race before Lajunen finally broke away on the last downhill.

Gottwald was third and teammate Mario Stecher was fourth.

Matt Dayton of Breckenridge, Colo., who took off nearly a month after having two concussions in jump training, had the third-fastest race and finished fifth, his best World Cup result. Lodwick, who was second Sunday, hung on to finish sixth and is third in the points behind Ackermann and then Gottwald.
