Brown's Canyon, Utah
It's almost unheard of to find a secluded chunk of property around Park City, Utah-no less 66 acres just six miles out of town in Brown's Canyon. Bob Wright and his wife, Denna, discovered such a plot in 1997 and then modeled their home from designs drafted in 1956 by their great-uncle, the famed Frank Lloyd Wright.

The house suits the landscape well: One long level fits nicely across the hillside and all of the windows face west, bringing in afternoon sun and great mountain views. A general contractor, Bob was hands-on during construction. Since the home is "off the grid" of the Park City infrastructure, he had to build with an eye for self-sufficiency, designing self-contained water and power systems and installing a diesel generator and solar panels. The windows are slightly tinted, double-paned glass which draw light and trap warmth.

Cell phone is the only available means of communication, leading Bob to advise potential buyers: "This home is for anyone who loves and appreciates nature and who enjoys solitude, and for someone who doesn't mind the do-it-yourself-lifestyle." Bob personally milled the poplar that makes up the ceilings, trims and extensive cupboards. And he and Denna hand-tossed tiny stones into the concrete walls to give them personalized texture.

All of the windows make for incredible views of both sun and moonlight from every room in the house. Mirrors on the bottom half of the diagonal windows in the kitchen reflect blue sky back into the room. Why are the Wrights selling their dream home? "We'd love to keep it," says Bob with a wistful smile, "but Denna and I both want to retire. We're considering joining the Peace Corps. We just can't do all that and hold onto the house as well."

PROS
The Wrights rent out two of their three bedrooms as B&B lodging at $95/night, and new owners could do the same. If the house isn't quite large enough yet, designs for the addition of both a sunroom and a garage have already been drafted and approved.

CONS
It will be a few years before the town extends water, electricity and phone lines to the house. Word has it that there are housing developments planned for Brown's Canyon, but currently, the only neighbor to be seen is the one that comes around in the winter to plow the half-mile driveway.
