Val d'Isere, France, Dec. 9, 2000--Austrian Hermann Maier collected his fourth win of the season - and 32nd of his career - in a World Cupdownhill Saturday at Val d'Isere, leading Austrians into the top four spots. Daron Rahlves (Sugar Bowl, CA) had the top U.S. result, finishing 15th, with Chad Fleischer (Vail, CO) 20th.

Outdoor Life Network will broadcast coverage of the race tonight at 7 EST.

Sub-freezing temperatures during the night helped the course set-up nicely for the race and Maier, racing 14th, sped over theOreiller-Killy run in 1:45.04. Runnerup was Stephan Eberharter, the Lake Louise downhill victor, with a time of 1:45.35. Fritz Strobl andAndreas Schifferer were the other top Austrians as Austrians filled seven of the first 10 places and Swiss skiers grabbed the otherthree.

Rahlves finished in 1:46.66 and Fleischer, the only other U.S. racer to break into the top 30, was 20th in 1:46.86. Bode Miller (Franconia,NH), starting 60th, was 36th and Casey Puckett (Aspen, CO), was 38th

"The course was in good shape," said U.S. downhill Coach Dale Stephens. "It got cold overnight and held up really well...

"We had a few mistakes today. Daron made two mistakes - up top on the flats where it's tight, and that cost him. We had a heckuva tailwind for later guys, so a lot of them were faster on the top where it's flatter, but they lost it on the bottom where it's more technical, more turny. We thought Daron might hold onto a top-10, but a coupla guys from the back came down and popped him out."

Norwegian Lasse Kjus boycotted the race to protest what he calls a chaotic race schedule with too many events. Kjetil Andre Aamodt, his teammate, also skipped the downhill to show support for the two-time World Cup overall champ.

The men race a giant slalom Sunday in Val d'Isere, then head to Sestriere, Italy, for what has become a traditional night slalom in theItalian resort town not far from the French border.
