Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany Jan. 26, 2002 (USSA)--Fritz Strobl of Austria took a step Saturday to beat back the impression he's a downhiller as, for the second year in a row, he won a World Cup super G, this one the 100th men's super G in history. Daron Rahlves (Sugar Bowl, CA) was ninth in the sunny, balmy weather, which caused softening snow.

Strobl, watched by his wife and the older of his two boys, collected the eighth victory of his World Cup career by a half-second over Swiss racer Didier Cuche in 1:21.10. Six of Strobl's victories have been in downhills, including Bormio four weeks ago, while both of his super G wins have been in the Kandahar race in Garmisch, last year and Saturday.

Rahlves was the lone U.S. points-getter, finishing ninth in 1:21.49. With the softening course, racers had little; only three of the top 25 finishers came from outside the first 30 starters.
