Spain To See New Resort

Galicia, Spain, July 23, 2001--(SAM Magazine) The wraps are off a project to build a second ski resort in Galicia, in northwest Spain. Private investment and public subsidies of about 36 million Euros are behind a plan to create a ski area at Trevinca. It is expected to open in 2002 and become the region's main employer where farming is the only other economic activity. The resort is expected to attract 250,000 visitors per year. Trevinca's good snow and accessible location is expected to make it the major skiing destination for northern Portugal. According to reports, the project has enjoyed widespread support from the public.

Winter sports in Trevinca date back to the 1960s when a hotel and two lifts were built on a nearby pass. Mismanagement led to its closure even before it opened, but the local business council has recently invested 890,000 Euros to reopen that hotel to tourism in the township.
