Behind the Shots with Jack Affleck
Behind the Shots with Jack Affleck
Vail Resorts' corporate photographer has a pretty sweet job- when it dumps, he's tasked with documenting all the snow. That means he spends his days surrounded by pro skiers, endless amounts of powder, and he always gets first chair. We asked him about what comes together to create his favorite shots.

Back-Lit Powder
Shooting into the sun is one of the best ways to show the white smoke of a cold powder day. The trick is to minimize the sunflare and still achieve the exposure that will showcase the texture of the snow and form of the skier. This image was shot off the backside of Vail mountain on the Minturn Mile late in the afternoon (our favorite way to end a big powder day shooting in the resort). The loose wide angle perspective and voyeuristic feeling of shooting from behind the bow of the tree also served to frame the shot in a very artistic manner.
