Cast & Carve with Tordrillo Mountain Lodge
The Salmon King

There are salmon in this hole. Huge red kings. And they’re not biting. But getting a true angler to move on to the next bend when he can see these massive slabs lurking is about as easy as tying a blood knot in 45-mile-per-hour winds. (Or so I’m told.) “Five more casts,” says Tom Bie, who happens to be the founder of The Drake magazine and rockstar of the flyfishing world. I wade down to Mike Overcast, our guide and co-owner of TML, and crack a beer.

The river flows. The sun warms my back. I sit down. “Now, five more with my new ‘outfit,’” Tom says, referring to the tiny adjustment he made to the split-shot weight on his line. Mike and I talk about Jackson Hole, where he grew up. “Five more from here,” Tom says, wading a few steps downstream. We laugh. After all, we have 18 hours of daylight. We can take our time.
