Decades: 1930s
Skiers go airborne

U.S. Olympic skier Alexander Bright wasn’t the first to conceive of an aerial tram that would carry U.S. skiers up the mountain, but he was the first to make it happen. After surveying sites throughout the White Mountains, Bright’s team identified the Franconia Notch area as the most favorable. In 1938, a tram constructed by the American Steel Wire Company began whisking skiers up New Hampshire’s Cannon Mountain.
