In 1959, Buddy Werner became the first American— one of only two to this day—to win the legendary Hahnenkamm downhill. Although the three-time Olympian never won an Olympic medal, he was the first American to regularly challenge, and often beat, European racers. Werner’s spectacular successes and crashes set the stage for a legitimate U.S. Men’s team.
