For 30 minutes in 1964, skiing enjoyed the biggest group lesson in the history of the sport. Ten million Americans tuned in to NBC’s Tonight Show to see young funnyman Johnny Carson get schooled by an angelic-looking but no-nonsense Austrian ski instructor named Kitty Falger. Despite Carson’s hijinks on the 12-foot plasticcovered ramp, Americans fell deeper in love with skiing—and ski instructors.
