After the dramatic rescue of the 33 trapped Chilean miners in the San Jose mine last year, there’s little more to add about the courage, resourcefulness and creativity of the Chileans. For Americans, who also celebrate a heritage of hardy pioneers and industrious entrepreneurs, the Chileans are a kindred people. Full of warmth, they welcome visitors and are proud to show off their country. But their best attribute may be the Chilean sense of humor. Despite hardships and a convoluted history that includes dictatorship, there’s an attractive joy in the Chilean persona. Of course, if you lived in one of the most beautiful places on the planet, with some of the best skiing in the world, you’d probably be pretty happy, too.
